Field Hockey

The SMS Field Hockey Team is looking for 6th through 8th grade girls interested in learning the sport of field hockey. Athletes do not need any experience to participate, you will be taught how to play! You will get a chance to test out your new skills with games against neighboring middle schools in October. Please review the attached letter for information about how to sign up and become medically cleared to participate. All registration and medical paperwork are due by August 4th.

Communication

Throughout the season, communication will be primarily through TEAM SNAP and email. It is essential that you and your child are signed up for our team snap so that you can view our schedule and other important information. Team members will receive an invitation to join once the team is finalized.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Practices will take place on days that we don’t have games. An official season schedule will be available on team snap. Practices will end at 4:30 pm.  Please arrange to pick your child up at that time. We will usually have about 2 practices per week.

    • At each practice, we will work on skill development, conditioning, and game comprehension.

    • Players are expected to attend every practice in order to earn playing time in games. I require the athlete to contact me ahead of time if they cannot make it to a practice or game.

  • Field hockey games usually begin between 3:45 and 4 pm and will run for approximately an hour. All games will take place on weekdays after school. Home games will take place at the middle school field. We will travel by bus to other schools for away games.

    • Parents are allowed to arrange for other transportation home for their children after away games. However, you must email athletic director Steven Stoner (steven.stoner@sparta.org) for permission to drive your child home.

    • An official game schedule will be available via the Sparta Sports Schedules site.

  • Athletes will be expected to use their own equipment (stick, mouthguard, and shin guards) for each practice and game. The locker room will be utilized to store clothing and equipment during the season.

I am looking forward to a successful first season!
