  • The administration of medication to pupils shall be done in exceptional circumstances wherein the child’s life and health may be jeopardized without it, i.e., adrenaline for bee stings as per standing orders and students’ own medication for asthmatic attack.
  • Medications prescribed by a licensed physician may be given at the written request of the parent/guardian and prescribing physician. A responsible adult is required to bring all medication to and from school. It is to be in the original container with the child’s name, dosage, medication name, and physician’s name on the label.
  • Over the counter medications, such as Tylenol, cough remedies and anti histamines may be administered with the written instructions from the parent/guardian and the pupil’s physician or dentist.
  • All medications are to be picked up at the end of the school year by the parent/guardian.
  • Medication forms for physicians and parent/guardians to complete are available in the nurse’s office.

Self-administered medication:

  • A pupil may be permitted to self-administer medication for asthma or other potentially life-threatening illnesses under the following policy requirements:
  • A written authorization for the administration of the medication must be presented to the school nurse.
  • The physician must certify, in writing, that the child has asthma or another life threatening illness and that the child has been instructed and is capable of properly administering the required medication.
  • The parent/guardian must sign a statement acknowledging that the district shall incur no liability as a result of any injury arising from the self-administration of medication by the pupil and that the parents/guardians shall indemnify and hold harmless the district and its employees or agents against any claims arising out of the self-administration of medication by the pupil.
  • The parent/guardian must sign a statement indemnifying and holding the district harmless against any injury or claims that arise as a result of the pupil’s self-administration.
  • Permission is effective for the school year for which it is granted and must be renewed annually, following the above-mentioned process.

In addition to the policy requirements, the following procedures should be followed:

  • The student should report to the nurse as soon as possible when a medication has been used.
  • The nurse should have emergency medication in her office in case the student loses or forgets it.
  • The student should demonstrate to the nurse that he/she knows how to properly administer the medication.
  • The nurse should notify appropriate teachers concerning the medication and any side effects it may cause.
