PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
__________________________________________________________________________________________

As Principal, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Sparta High School. We are very proud of our high school and the Sparta community.

Sparta High School, located in Sussex County, is a comprehensive high school with an enrollment of approximately 1200 students. The success and accomplishments of our high school can be directly linked to the professional commitment and dedication of our staff, the cooperative spirit of our students, and the supportive encouragement of our parents and community. We take great pride in our strong academic program, varied extra-curricular activities, and successful sports programs.

Our philosophy at Sparta High School is to create motivated and inquisitive learners through a positive, safe, and student-centered school environment that is based on mutual respect and acceptance. Our goal, through a challenging academic program, is to equip our students with the necessary knowledge and skills to become responsible and successful contributing members of society.

The backbone of Sparta High School is our excellent staff. This outstanding group of teachers, guidance counselors, special service staff, administrators, and support professionals provide our students with a quality educational experience. Our staff takes advantage of professional development opportunities taught by district personnel as well as outside professionals. Teachers are also encouraged to pursue post-graduate studies and to attend conferences and symposiums in their fields. 82% of our faculty has earned master’s degrees and one member of our faculty holds a doctorate degree.

Sparta High School provides a curriculum and academic program geared towards meeting the needs of all learners. The curriculum is challenging and student-focused as it applies to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The academic program offers a wide range of courses from self-contained special education classes to advanced placement courses. The elective program has been designed to address the many interests of our students including the areas of art, music, and technology education.

The tradition of academic excellence at Sparta High School is exemplified in the Class of 2011. The 2011 graduating class achieved a combined critical reading and math SAT score of 1042 and a composite ACT score of 23.5. Other academic achievements of the class of 2011 include: five National Merit Commended Scholars, two National Merit Semi-finalists, and 41students who were recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. Over 82% of all students taking AP exams last spring achieved a passing score of 3 or better. Over 92% of all Sparta High School graduates attend two or four year colleges. Data for the class of 2012 will be posted as soon as it is available. In addition to the competitive and rigorous academics of Sparta High School, we are most proud of our varied extra-curricular and successful athletic programs. A large majority of our student body participate in one or more levels of interscholastic and/or extra-curricular activities.

We offer over 35 co-curricular programs, including vocal and instrumental music, drama, art, academic competitions and clubs, literary publications and an extensive peer leadership program that assists freshmen as they assimilate into a new learning environment. Many of our students are deeply involved in community-oriented service organizations such as Student Council and Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club. Sparta High School students in the music program distinguish themselves by being selected to All-State, All-North Jersey Region, All-Sussex County, and All- Eastern competitions.

We are committed to 28 interscholastic sports for both girls and boys at the varsity and sub-varsity levels. Approximately 33 percent of students participate in athletics each season. Some of Sparta's team accomplishments in 2011 include: NJSIAA Group 3 Softball Championship; NJSIAA Bowling Sectional Championship; Girls’ Tennis, Softball, and Football NJAC Champions; Ice Hockey, Boys' and Girls' Lacrosse Divisional Champions.  Numerous sportsmanship and coach of the year honors were also awarded.  Athletic success is not limited to victories and championships. Our student athletes benefit greatly from the total athletic experience at Sparta High School.  Sparta’s 2011 candidate was awarded Scholar Athlete of the Year by the Sussex County United Way.

Sparta High School enjoys strong community support. Parent and community involvement is an integral part of our high school culture. Support groups such as our PSTO, the Spartan Club, Sparta Education Foundation, Music Boosters, Project Graduation and parent booster clubs for various sports are involved in volunteer efforts at our high school. These support groups provide innovative programs, student scholarships, and moral support. Parents also serve on various school committees.
In September of 2006, the community passed a 72.5 million dollar referendum to reconstruct our high school. This reconstruction project, which was started during the summer of 2007, has provided our students and staff with a state-of-the-art school facility which includes a new auditorium, cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, science and computer laboratories, and 24 new classrooms. The reconstruction project was completed during the 2010-2011 school year. We take great pride in the reputation of our school, the professionalism of our staff, and our shared commitment to meeting the high expectations of the Sparta community. We are grateful to our parents for being active partners in seeing all our students reach their maximum potential.

I encourage you to explore our informational website about our high school. It is our goal to provide our parents and community members with accurate and timely information about our school. I always welcome parent and community communication and encourage anyone with questions or concerns to contact my office. Enjoy the website, but please visit our high school to experience, first hand, the exciting learning activities taking place with our
students.
