DRESS CODE

Appropriate dress, grooming, positive self-image and proper behavior are relevant and necessary components of a quality education.  In the Sparta Township Public Schools, students are expected to look neat and clean and dressed in a manner considered appropriate for school.  Teachers and administrators reserve the right to determine if a pupil is jeopardizing the academic environment or creating a health or safety hazard by their mode of dress.  The following examples are guidelines for students, parents, and school personnel to determine what would be considered inappropriate attire.

1.       Apparel referring to alcoholic beverages, narcotics of any kind, pornographic messages
          or inappropriate language

2.       Clothing which is too tight to inhibit movement or cause distraction

3.       Shirts and blouses which expose the midriff or do not cover the waist

4.       Off the shoulder, strapless tops, and tank tops

5.       Skirts or dresses short enough to cause distraction or long enough to cause tripping

6.       Beach-like clothing of any type

7.       Hats are not permitted, except under certain circumstances approved by the school administration

Tailored shorts of appropriate length are permitted with the stipulation that they reach the knee area and are not of the beach-like or gym variety.  Shoes or sneakers must be worn at all times.  The administration of the Alpine School shall ask students and their parents to correct dress and grooming when it is felt that it is necessary to do so in order to preserve the school as an environment suitable for learning.

TWO IMPORTANT REASONS FOR A DRESS CODE:

1.      Safety

2.      Less distractions from Learning
